The Duckface Epidemic

Attention:

Fellow social networking usersthere seems to be a widespread outbreak of The Duckface Epidemic

AKA: Bathroom Mirror Self-Portrait Syndrome.

I'm sure you're all too familiar with this phenomenon prevalent in tweens but has been known to spread to 20 somethings and beyond, as well.

The cause of this epidemic is still unknown but appears to most commonly affect those tweens that own or have come in contact with a camera phone.

The social networking community is currently working on finding a cure.

Ok ok. So I'm joking.
 But not really.
Sort of.

Seriously though, WHAT is this about?

I guess I can understand the desire to make a weird cute face while sticking my butt out, take a picture of said pose, and then post it on facebook/instagram/twitter for the world to see.

I mean, I GUESS I can understand.

(I totally know what I just said is a stereotype and not EVERY self-portrait pose is like that...just so you know.)

I get that it's nice to receive compliments. I mean, that's pretty universal. I don't know anyone that doesn't like to be told they look nice. Or that they have nice eyes. Or a pretty smile.

Or anyone that doesn't like to receive 58 likes on their newly posted self-portrait picture within 5 minutes. That's definitely an ego booster.

But the face. I just can't get over the face. The duckface.

I have a sneaky suspicion that Zoolander started it all
Can someone explain? Maybe I'm too old. Maybe I've lost touch with the Hannah Montana generation and I just can't grasp the fad of posting non stop pictures of myself while making such an unnatural face.

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE tweens, teenagers, etc. I happen to know some pretty sweet teenagers that I greatly respect and care about. And I'm definitely not saying posting 100 + pics of yourself a week gives off any moral implications.

I. Just. Don't. Get. It.

But I think we can all agree that it's a pretty trendy activity. I'll admit, I think I have all of about 1 picture of myself doing the standard bathroom self-portrait. I was down about 30lbs and friends were asking to see pictures, one friend suggested I take said "standard" pic and the rest is history.

And it felt great to get that positive feedback! And all those "likes"!! There's not disputing that.

But the excessive amount of self-portrait pics posted to Facebook on a daily basis is a BIT out of control in my opinion.

I'm not trying to be a hater. Or maybe I am. I guess the definition of the term "hater" is really subjective. And since this is my blog I'll go ahead and say I'm not being a hater. So there!!

(also, we could very well be asking the question:  "what's this trend about where everyone decides they're a brilliant writer and creates a blog and posts pointless rantings and comical but still pointless stories. THERE's a question I'd like an answer to!!! I kid, I kid.)

Either way, I'm just keeping it real and I have nothin but love.

and I DO have a point.....

I just want to say to all those self-portrait posters out there: You're worth more than facebook picture "likes". And I get that for some it's probably not even about fueling your self worth at all. Maybe it's just a fun way to pass the time or to show your friends the rockin new haircut you have.

BUT, if that's not the case for you and your day is ruined if you get anything less than 30 "likes" on your pic.... I happen to know a great book that has some pretty solid advice on where our worth comes from.

Yeah. I'm THAT cheesy.

You guessed it: The Bible.

I struggle all the time with my idea of self worth, as I'm sure most people do. Which is why I guess its so convenient that our self worth doesn't come from anything physical.

I'll stop talking typing now and just leave you with some truth, light, and love :)

For you formed my inward parts:
you knitted me together in my mother's womb.
I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.
Wonderful are your works;
my soul knows it very well.
My frame was not hidden from you,
when I was being made in secret,
intricately woven in the depths of the earth.
